welcome

Greetings, Parents of Burton Elementary Students!

Welcome to the 2026-27 school year at Burton Elementary! We are so excited to have you! It's always a little difficult to shake off the leisure of summertime, but we're ready for the new school year and are especially looking forward to seeing the children again.

Burton Elementary’s Back To School Night will be held tomorrow (Friday),  August 28th from noon-2 p.m. Please visit and meet teachers during this time. You can also sign up to volunteer in the teacher's classroom and with our PTO.

As a reminder, the first day of school is MONDAY, AUGUST 31, 2026. School begins at 8:00 AM and ends at 2:25 PM. Please make sure your student(s) have a regular-sized backpack to carry things back and forth. (For a second year, the Madison School Board approved a budget that eliminates registration fees for students in Kindergarten through 4th grade.)

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school at 208-359-3332 or email our administrative assistant, Julia Holmes, at holmesj@msd321.com.

Implementing Idaho's New Moment of Silence Law – HB623

We also want to inform you about an important update regarding our daily morning routines. In compliance with Idaho’s newly enacted House Bill 623, all K–12 public schools across the state are now required to observe a daily, mandatory 60-second moment of silence at or near the start of the school day.

Why We Are Implementing This:

Lawmakers passed this measure to give students a reliable, daily pause to decompress, focus, and mentally prepare for the day ahead, which supporters believe can positively impact student mental well-being.

In our fast-paced world, a dedicated minute of quiet can help students cultivate mindfulness and start their morning with intentionality.

How We Will Implement This:

• Student choice: During this 60-second period, students may sit quietly and choose how to use their time. They can use it for silent reflection, meditation, personal prayer, or quiet thought.

• Distraction-Free Environment: To protect the environment for everyone, all students must remain completely silent and make no distracting displays that would disrupt their peers. Regular classroom management will apply to ensure a respectful environment.

• Staff Boundaries: Our teachers and staff will supervise the room to maintain order, but by law, they are strictly prohibited from instructing, suggesting, or directing students on what to think about or how to use their silent time.

Because our teachers cannot provide guidance on how to spend these 60 seconds, we highly encourage you to talk with your children at home about how they can best utilize this minute of silent reflection to benefit their own day.
