Speech-Language Pathology
Madison School District’s speech-language pathologists support the communication needs of students throughout the district. Speech-language pathologists conduct speech and language assessments, oversee hearing screenings, and work collaboratively with parents and school staff to provide support for students with speech and/or language impairments. Speech-language paraprofessionals assist speech-language pathologists in serving students’ communication needs.
“Speech” refers to the mechanics of talking. It includes articulation, voice, resonance, and fluency. “Language” refers to how we symbolically represent the thoughts we communicate with others. This includes vocabulary, word structure, grammar, and sentence structure. Language also includes the social communication rules that govern how individuals interact with one another.
