May is National Mental Health Awareness Month
and we need YOUR help bringing more awareness into the community! We are proud to join our Madison Cares department for a month filled with education,
activities and in hopes we can start some conversations on this very important topic.

DID YOU KNOW...
• 1 in 4 people suffer from a diagnosable mental health disorder in a given year.
• 1/2 of all mental health disorders begin by the age of 14, 3/4 by the age of 24.
• Everyday 124 Americans die by suicide. That is 1 every 12 minutes.
• The average delay between onset of mental illness symptoms and treatment is 11 years
• Depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy $1 trillion in lost productivity each year
• Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide
• Mental illness and substance use disorders are involved in 1 out of every 8 emergency department visits by a U.S. adult (estimated 12 million visits)
• Mood disorders are the most common cause of hospitalization for all people in the U.S. under age 45 (after excluding hospitalization relating to pregnancy and birth)
• 90% of people who die by suicide had shown symptoms of a mental health condition, according to interviews with family, friends and medical professionals

Join us May 12, 4:30-7:30pm for a Kite Flying event at Bobcat Stadium. First 300 PEOPLE GET FREE KITES! Hot Dog Dinner for all! Come Support the GREEN RIBBON!

Green Day
Wear green, shine a green light, do a green art project. May 19 is our day to COLOR THE TOWN GREEN in support of Mental Health!
(Teachers/Schools- Submit a photo of how YOUR class celebrating Green Day! We will be doing a drawing from those who submit photos or videos for TWO $100 Walmart Gift Cards! Submit photos/videos goudyj@msd321.com.

Coloring Pages
Coloring is a great way to relieve stress! Get the whole family involved and use it as an opportunity to discuss mental health. Color one of the Lift Each Other Up coloring pages. If you don't have a way to print them, stop by the Madison Education Center to pick up copies. Once they are complete, bring it by the Madison Education Center (60 W. Main) with your names and phone number. At the end of the month, we will randomly draw for FOUR $50 Gift Cards!
Teachers, feel free to do this as a class activity as well!



Rock Painting for Hope
Paint a rock with something that makes you happy, adds light to your life or gives you hope. Bring it by the Madison Education Center and exchange it for a Mental Health GIVEAWAY item!

Youth Mental Health First Aid Classes
Becoming educated on mental illness, warning signs and symptoms is one of the best way to become a mental health champion in our community! Check out these two, evidence based certifications offered through our district. Knowledge is power!

* Mental Health First Aid- For Adults working with Teens • Tuesday & Wednesday May 10 & 11, 4:00pm-8:00pm *Taught by Jess Goudy and Creshel Allowitz (this class is geared towards adults who have or work with teens)
* Mental Health First Aid - For Adults Working with Adults • May 18 & 19 4-8 pm Taught by* Travis Schwab (this class is geared towards adults who work with or have an adult living with a mental illness)
